We are proud to present our first member car showcase. I could not have thought of a better car to begin our showcases with! A pure American Muscle car that turned heads everywhere we drove it!
We started out on a beautiful Saturday morning, our friend George (honorary 1st CC500 member) our video crew and myself. We could not have picked a better day and location to present this beautiful classic car!
The iconic 1968 Dodge Charger R/T with the Coke Bottle design that won the hearts of a generation as one of the best-looking muscle cars in the US, with many considering it the best-looking performance car of the 1960's.
The standard engine in the Charger was the 318 cubic inch V-8, but many opted for the 383 two-barrel V8, the 426 Hemi, or the 440 Magnum. This particular car was modified with a new Mopar 520 cubic inch engine that produces 596 hp!
I had the privilege to drive this car and I can attest to its awesomeness! Right away you feel the power it exhumes. It is not an easy car to drive by no means, and you have to get used to it. Heavy clutch and stiff transmission as expected for a car of this displacement, size and power. Once you drive it around for a little bit and get "closer" to it, the fun begins!
This car is not a toy, it demands respect and rewards you plentifully. We drove the car around for about 4 hrs and wherever we went people looked. We were approached by people who were asking if it was for sale. People just loved this car, and with good reason.
The car drives and handles beautifully, even through the tight corners you see on the video. For the past 21 years it's owner has taken care, restored and modified this car to make it better than the original.
For the past 50 years, since the first Dodge Charger was realeased in 1966, Americans have enjoyed an obsession with power and performance. The 1966 Charger was Dodge's first real muscle car. The 1968 Dodge Charger built upon the 1966 model, maintaining the soul of the vehicle while introducing a new design and performance upgrades that left its competition in the dust. The car became so popular that was featured in many movies such as Bullitt, Vanishing Point, Christine and Blade!
George is definitely having a lot of fun with his car and we are looking forward to seeing him and his car around at our club's events! Thank you George!
